I’ve heard a few times that its unfair that game ratings use less than half of the 1-10 scale when reviewing games, with 10 being the top games, and 7 being acceptable, and everything below it not worth buying. Comparatively, it is said that this treatment is far different from what you would expect from a movie where getting 3 stars is still considered good.
Clearly, these people have never used a 1 to 10 scale before. I’m personally glad that reviewers using the 1 to 10 score system have thus far resisted the urge to give scores like “12 out of 10” or “-30 out of 10” like many people do when asked to use this same scale. In a slightly more serious sense however, it should be noted that since games do cost roughly 2-3 times as much as a movie, depending on how much you spend on snacks, its logical that you’d want to put that money towards something of a significantly higher standard.
I am ok with spending 10 bucks to watch a movie that is mediocre, or forgettable. I’m also ok with spending another 15 dollars getting some popcorn and a soda to make sitting through it more pleasant. I am NOT willing to spend 60 dollars on a game that is bland, boring, or otherwise not fun.
