Review: Super Scribblenauts

I picked up Super Scribblenauts last week. I played the first a bit and had fun with seeing what the dictionary had in it, and watching random creatures fight to the death. In Super Scribblenauts you get to use adjectives as well in order to create even more interesting creations.

Just what kind of items are we talking about here? Well, say you had to kill something, you could in the previous game summon Cthulu or God, as they tend to kill anything in one shot. In this game you could summon a giant evil badger.

The user interface has improved since the first game. It is much easier to control Maxwell with the D pad rather than stylus. As well, you have an adjective dictionary that records adjectives you’ve used recently so you can quickly add them to unique items. The hint system is OK, but the button location is unintuitive and I’ve spent quite a few Ollars accidentally pressing the ‘buy next hint’ button intending to close the window.

The puzzles are hit and miss mostly. There are several puzzles that you really can come up with a plethora of solutions, which are the ones I like, since you can try to find obscure ways of solving them. However, some require you to be riding the same train of thought as the designer.

For example, one puzzle has you hire school teachers, but rather than being able to input science teacher, you needed to input scientist, which counts as a science teacher. Another wanted me to sneak an item out of a wedding. using a sleeping potion on everybody so they were asleep while i escaped didn’t work, but sticking the item in a bag in plane sight and walking out works fine.

There is a level designer where you can make your own levels, but I haven’t managed to figure it out yet, there doesn’t seem to be much ingame help on how to set up the level.

Overall, it is a fun game, even if you do nothing but summon random people and animals to see how they react to each other. Just like the last game, various related people and animals do interact, though in some ways differently, such as Atheists in this game kill God, where in the last one they cowered and ran away.

So, do I recommend it? For the price it is at, yes. It is only about 24 dollars in my area which is pretty good for a brand new game, and if you like puzzles, writing or using your own imagination the game will keep you entertained for a good long while.
